Amazing games have been released on all of Nintendo’s consoles, but unfortunately not all of them have been good. So here are the worst Nintendo games.
NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)
Ah, the NES… A great place to start talking about the worst Nintendo games. Although some real gems were released for the console, it was notorious one for terrible games. One major player in the ‘bad video games market’ was the company known as LJN. Unfortunately, they made a mess of practically every franchise they could get hold of. Bad games flooded the video game the market, and it was hard to tell the good from the bad.
Anyway, let’s get straight to the worst Nintendo game… And, it has to be Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1988 side-scrolling ‘action’ game loosely based on The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Gameplay alternates between the characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde based on the player’s ability to either avoid or cause damage. Of course, it doesn’t matter how good or bad you are at the game, as it is practically unplayable…
Dis-honourable mentions: Anything LJN, Action 52, Ghostbusters.
SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)
The SNES the console that added a bit of ‘super’ to the NES. The SNES brought us some pretty legendary games such as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past… But, with some good games came some really bad ones. Personally, the worst game I experienced with the console was Luigi’s first-ever game… Mario is Missing!.
In Mario is Missing!, you must travel around the world to find and return stolen treasures in a quest to find Mario. (Who has obviously been captured by Bowser) Mario Is Missing! was part of a series of educational Mario games. Unfortunately, it didn’t leave you wanting to actually learn anything. The game simply lacked fun, which was a shame as it was Luigi’s first game and he would not have another until 2001. This was when Luigi’s Mansion was released on the Nintendo GameCube.
Dis-honourable mentions: Anything LJN, Rise of the Robots, Super 3D Noah’s Ark.
Nintendo 64 (N64)
The Nintendo 64 gave us controllers that required three hands… But, somehow it worked, and some of the world’s greatest games came out of it. With the likes of Super Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the N64 wasn’t one to miss. With 64-bits comes great responsibility however, and a number of games slipped through the net of quality.
The worst of the bunch, and possibly one of if not the worst games EVER made, we have Superman (64). Loosely based on the animated series of Superman, it flew into the shelves in 1999… Literally, flew into the shelves.
With repetitive gameplay, awful sounds, bland music, sluggish/unresponsive controls, lagging frame rates… Superman had it all.
Dis-honourable mentions: Daikatana, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Carmageddon 64.
Mentioned earlier, the GameCube, Even though the console was crushed by its rivals in sales, this little box of joy brought us some great new exclusives. The Nintendo GameCube is still seen as Nintendo’s best console by some… But, that, unfortunately, doesn’t mean there are no bad GameCube games.
Meet, Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis… Basically, take the Superman (N64) game… Turn it into an Aquaman game and, of you go. Even the hard-core Aquaman devotees will have little love for this short, shallow, problematic and downright unplayable game.
Dis-honourable mentions: Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure, Nickelodeon Party Blast, Sonic Riders
Back when the Nintendo Wii was released for some reason, the console was hard to get hold of… Now, you can find one practically anywhere and for next to nothing. Once the fad for the Wii had passed, people started to notice that Nintendo’s motion-based console wasn’t all that.
Now, Don’t get me wrong the Wii has some great exclusives and is backwards compatible with GameCube games. However, there are a number of REALLY bad games for it.
The worst Wii game I can think of is called Ninjabread Man… Ninjabread Man is a VERY basic platformer with three whole levels! If you can withstand half an hour of terrible camera work, controls and bugs, then you will probably be able to complete the game. I feel sorry for anyone that may have actually bought this one…
Dis-honourable mentions: London Taxi: Rush Hour, Far Cry Vengeance, Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast, Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal.
With very few extras, minimum 3rd party support, no internal hard drive (storage) and a strange control scheme came the Nintendo Switch Alpha… Sorry, the Wii U. Although the idea was a good one, the Wii U failed in a number of departments including the ‘good games department’.
The worst of the worst comes in the form of Meme Run... Meme Run is a terribly bland endless runner with little passion, work or care put into it. Other than that there isn’t much I can say about the game, just don’t bother.
Dis-honourable mentions: Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric, Epic Mickey: The Power Of Two, Mario Party 10, Hello Kitty Kruisers.
Nintendo consoles have been riddled with hastily developed minigame collections of varying qualities since forever. The Nintendo Switch, despite stepping it up its game since the Wii, Nintendo still feel the need to market a terrible collection of minigames…1-2-Switch.
Doing things like, I don’t know, eating a sandwich in a mini-game isn’t fun for very long… Yes, activities such as this can be entertaining when reduced to five seconds intervals as in WarioWare, But there needs to be variation. The problem with 1-2-Switch is that it stretches the concept too thin. 1-2-Switch which may I add, is NOT included with the console, selling this is crazy!
Dis-honourable mentions: ARMS, Fortnite, Plantera Deluxe.
Of course, there are other games that could have made this list, however, these are some of my worst titles for the Nintendo consoles.
